On My Radar: NYC Homo Thugs

A few years ago I had the opportunity to go to a “secret” homo thug party with a male friend in the Bronx. I wasn’t able to get in so we had to leave, but at the time I was completely intrigued by the idea of hyper masculine hip-hop loving dudes who were also gay.

The AG scene (gay women of color who are typically masculine in dress and behavior) has been pretty well documented (see last year’s piece in the Village Voice) but besides the rad documentary Beyond Beats and Rhymes, I haven’t seen anything recent about Homo Thugs – until I stumbled onto this Current TV pod:

I am and will continue to be fascinated by the myriad of ways that people interpret and subvert gender roles and sexual identity labels.
