A Soul Train weekend. Me: a poor, confused Chicano kid - growing up in the barrio, post civil-rights, desegregation era, mostly devoid of an identity - disconnected and enduring racism after being bussed miles away to attend school in an affluent, Caucasian area. My weekend deprogramming program included my watching, and relating to Saturday morning shows such as Fat Albert and Soul Train, produced by a minority group different than my own…. Don Cornelius’ passing is, for me, a nostalgic and profound event.
Thanks for sharing your story.

So I haven’t had the time to write in my tumblr (I’ve been surprisingly busy) but I wanted to share my first teaching experience at a MOLAA’s workshop! It was so much fun, even if I had to deal with less-than enthusiastic high school students haha… I met Carmen, who has been teaching art at MOLAA and a few other art centers in L.A., and I helped her set up a mono-print activity. Because the children had just toured the MEX/L.A. exhibition, we wanted to speak about some of the artists and have them produce posters using a mono-print technique. The inspiration came from Leonard Castellanos’ (Los Angeles, California, b. 1943) ”Rifa” piece which was created in 1972 and portrayed Mexican revolutionary, Emiliano Zapata and “reworked to express a unique Chicano perspective”. I wish I could have taken pictures, but since I can now create my own primitive mono-prints, I might try to come up with a few posters on my own!

Tr3s.com poll results on February 5, 2012
:/ I am glad this poll doesn’t represent all Latinos. We need to care about the 2012 presidential election because — right at this very moment — both Obama’s administration and all the republican presidential candidates care about the Latino vote. They care about it because they look at the numbers and they want our voting power.
Between 2000 and 2010, the “Hispanic” population grew over four times faster than the overall population in the South and 12 times faster in the Midwest. The Hispanic population is growing faster than any other demographic in the country.
Politicians recognize our voting power as Latinos. I hope we can too and use it for good.

West Side Story - ”A Boy Like That”
Interesting factoid: In 1995 Selena recorded “A Boy Like That” for the various-artists compilation album The Songs of West Side Story, which was a benefit for AIDS Project Los Angeles.
